This is a really tiring
walk - but on the plus side, beautiful views of St Austell Bay
and distant glimpses of Rame Head. This is one you simply cannot
miss!
Take note of the
tides - the road at Portmellon has been known to be under water
at high tide! |
For this walk, you need OS Landranger 204, Truro & Falmouth
Not only do you walk through Mevagissey
and Pentewan, but you'll see places that only walkers can see:
Hallane and Black Head, absolutely wonderful places.

To get there, take the St Austell bypass, if
driving towards Truro, take the first left after the Charlestown
roundabout; if driving the other way, take the turning on the
right at the top of the hill after Asda. Got it?
Follow this road for a mile or so, past the hospital then
turn left at the sign for Porthpean. Watch out for the road down
to the beach on the left, because the car park is immediately
opposite on the right!

As you can see from the map, it is possible to follow the
road down and meet the B3273 near Pentewan: However, I'd suggest
taking the main road - Drive back to the bypass, turn left towards
Truro and follow until the second roundabout signposted on the
left to Mevagissey. Drive along this road (the B3273) and then
through Mevagissey. It's difficult to give you the route here,
but basically, you have to work over to the right, eventually
heading up the hill towards Portmellon & Gorran. When you
get to Portmellon, you will see a road on the right leading in
to a small housing estate - this is where we parked. As
I warned above, be aware of tide times!
