PORTMELLON TO PORTHPEAN
To start with, this walk is boring: You have to walk along
the road into Mevagissey, although we do like to look at the
houses as we go! It certainly seems that property on any coastline
is more expensive and fancy than inland. Once through Mevagissey,
the path becomes steep until the top of the fairly high cliff.

The path along here is exposed to the weather - especially
from the east, and that's where it came from when we walked here!
The walk down to Pentewan is fairly pleasant, although the
roar of the traffic beside the footpath is a bit disconcerting.
Turn right into Pentewan which is a very nice village, with one
or two watering holes for the thirsty traveller. Follow the lane
up the hill and you'll see the Coastpath on the right.

One of the worst parts that I can remember is the approaches
to Black Head. Suddenly you're faced with an extremely steep
climb: It was a biting wind (in Cornwall we call it a lazy wind
- work that one out!) yet by the time we reached the top, we
were steaming! This was followed by an almost vertical descent
down hundreds of steps to a lane leading to an isolated - and
I mean isolated! cottage just off the beach at Hallane. You then
have another ascent towards Black Head but it is worth it, because
you have fabulous views of the south coast.
The rest of the path to Porthpean is very pleasant, although
there are one or two steep ravines that you don't really need!
