PORTMELLON TO PORTHPEAN

Walked 17.11.1996: Ascent 2110ft : Descent 2051ft : Distance 6.88

:miles: 4¾ hrs

Colin got to Porthpean first today and parked in the car park then watched golfers playing on the hill behind the car park. We saw a dog like Honey, and tried to pet it but it ran away up the road to a farm. We drove in John's car to Porthmellon as it was too awkward to park back at Bodrugan Farm today. We walked up the road towards Mevagissey, then along the harbour and up the steep hill the other side, past the coast guard station and houses and out onto a headland bordered by gardens. We had some lovely views of St. Austell Bay here. We walked up steep paths again and saw the valley where the Lost Gardens of Heligan are. Here in a sheltered corner of a field we tried unsuccessfully to get out of the biting wind to have lunch.

Parked up at Portmellon & sorting out the gear

Later we climbed on up a steep field to a road above Pentewan and wandered along a sunken path all the way down beside this busy road. Colin and John were at the bottom waiting for us on a seat. We walked into Pentewan past a lovely stream and pretty cottages to the end and wandered up the hill then turned right round on to a path, past some more old houses and right out onto the headland again. We saw a pair of peregrines here sitting on the edge of the cliff. We were getting tired by now and thankfully dropped down into a wooded valley and went past a deserted cottage by Hallane Beach, up a lane and "yomped" out onto Black Head, looking back at the waterfall on the beach through an arch in the cliff. It was too dark and gloomy for a photograph down here today.

Black Head

On the way down to Mevagissey

We rounded Black Head and walked through another wooded valley past a lovely house on the cliffs and up to a road, past parked cars and then over a style into a field. We met a man walking along here and he said the next bit was quite steep! The valley just fell away, we have seen nothing like it - a sheer drop down steps too many to count and then steps straight up the other side where Colin's knees started to give out. We thought things could not get much worse, when it started to rain. There was a beautiful rainbow over the sea and the fields, Soon we came up to backs of houses and gardens that meant we were very near to Porthpean. This walk was very hard and it was nearly dark as we reached the car park, but then, it was late November and very overcast.

Just after Black Head
