Welcome
to Stanbury Mouth
So, here you are at Welcombe and immediately you can see
what this walk will be like; the footpath only goes one way -
upwards! Take the hill slowly, then when you reach the top, look
back and admire the view towards Hartland and Lundy. Now you
walk down past 'Duncans Hut', a restored lookout, to Marsland
Mouth; here is the border between Cornwall and England, and the
start of The Cornish Coastal Footpath -Upwards again, then the
path levels out (joke) before meandering down Henna Cliff. Look
to the left and see the Vicarage built by Rev. Hawker and based
on his beloved Oxford's spires. If you wish to detour to the
Church (and it's worth it - there's a tea room as well!),
continue climbing Vicarage Cliff then turn left; the graveyard
holds many graves of sailors who were drowned after being shipwrecked
on the vicious rocks of this coast.
|
Continue along Vicarage Cliff, and you will find "Hawkers
Hut" on your right: Made from driftwood (there used to be
a lot around!) by Rev. Hawker, he used to sit here and compose
poetry while staring out to sea. Down a lot of steps to The Tidna
with Higher Sharpnose Point to the right. Go past a disused coastguard
station and follow the path until you start to drop down to Stanbury
Mouth.
|
On the left is a path leading inland: Walk along the lane
until the path divides. Turn left, up the hill until at long
last, a gate appears, with the car parked nearby.
