We were to meet in the car park for Pencarrow Head at 11.30,
but unfortunately the map was so confusing thatJohn and Dot were
waiting in another car park a couple of miles away! Eventually
we met up and we trundled off to Polperro. We parked in the large
car park just outside Polperro and walked down through the village
amongst the hordes of visitors. We passed the horse drawn buses
with tired looking horses standing in the midday sun, looked
at some shops and wandered down by the Blue Peter Inn and found
the coast path. It was a lovely sunny breezy day and as we rounded
the headland we left most of the people behind. The path was
quite steep and rocky and all along were seats built into the
cliffs sheltering under the rocks. Quite a few people were on
these.

We walked on for an hour and stopped to have our lunch at
Nealand Point just before going up 150 steps at Colors Cove.
We walked up and over the steep rise and saw a pair of peregrines
flying around, all this hillside was alive with Whitethroats
and Stonechats, large black beetles were all over the path and
we had to keep stepping over them. We crossed a boardwalk over
a stream and up and down more steps and rises and then we went
past a strange navigation aid, marking the Udder Rock a mile
out to sea. The buoy by this rock was continually ringing, but
it was a pleasant sound. Colin took our photo here, We carried
on and sat for a few moments on steps leading to a stile and
then continued on across a lovely field, and down a little track
towards a beach called West Coombe. We heard our first cuckoo
of the year here. This little beach was quite crowded with children
and dogs, and people were swimming. It seemed a real smugglers
cove.

On we went over a beautiful bracken covered hillside sloping
down towards the sea. We followed the path and saw an old Coast
Guard House very close to the waters edge. We did not go to see
it but carried on right around Pencarrow Head. The views of the
bay was lovely as all the yachts from Fowey were racing along.
They all looked so pretty with their white sails up. We went
up the slope and through a gate and back along the road to get
to the car; We sat and rested for a while before going to Polperro
again to John's car.
Our
destination, Pencarrow Head, on the far side of Lantivet Bay.
The
dark mass behind it is Blackbottle Rock on the far side of Lantic
Bay. To the right, in the distance is Gribbin Head; or most of
it, anyway.
