We arrived
at Lands End on a dry, clear and cold day, after having a cooked
breakfast that Colin had prepared for us all before we started
out.
(It was massive!
I'd just given up smoking and found a huge appetite!)

The car park was full and there were lots of tourists about,
most of them seemed to be Japanese. We strolled around the complex,
watching the little land train go by to The Last House and then
we braved the wind to stand under the flags to have our photographs
taken. John set up his delayed-action camera, and joined us in
the line up. We donned hats and gloves and set off along the
coast to the most westerly village of Sennen Cove with the Longships
Lighthouse 1½ miles out to sea on our left.
The sand dunes were hard going, so we sat down and had a
rest and a drink; it was only 40 minutes into the walk but the
dunes were so soft that we were tired already. We passed a couple
of little attractive chalets with lovely gardens on the side
of the hills.

It took an hour to cross Sennen Cove as it is nearly two
miles long. At the other end, we sat down in the lee of the rocks
and had our lunch. There were a lot of people walking that day
and a couple asked us if we had seen the sharks... About two
minutes later, a school of dolphins came into the bay, leaping
and jumping: We were treated to a wonderful display. As we neared
Cot Valley, the track was very steep and close to the edge. The
wind was verey strong in places and we were being buffeyed a
lot. When we got to Cot, a lot of people were at the top, sheltering
from the wind. Colin went briskly ahead to tell them that some
dolphins had come close to the cliffs, so they all turned into
the wind to see them swimming past. We carried on up the road
and then left, up a rough path, past a garden with a realistic
scarecrow in it, where we saw a couple of travellers who told
us we were on the wrong track. This one led to a ledge where
their tent was pitched! Wrong way again...
We got up to Carn Gloose and saw Cape Cornwall in the distance
waiting for us to return to John's car. It was all downhill now,
down a very rough track past some old Cornish cottages. Honey
was tired and didn't like the stones, so Colin had to carry her
back to the car park.
