THE
LIZARD TO CARRICK LÛZ
Walked

miles: 4¾ hrs |
We met today in Redruth, then followed each other to Arowan. We
had not been there before so we were unsure if we could park
there. We found a pull in up a deserted lane leading to farm
buildings, and left Colin's car by a ruined water pump windmill.
We went to the Lizard and parked on the crowded green and got
all our boots and rucksacks sorted out. Off we went down the
road mingling with all the holidaymakers, It was late afternoon,
still very hot, but it was a bit breezy just right for walking.

We walked past the lighthouse and rounded beautiful
Housel Bay. The coast path was crowded here and we had to keep
stepping in the hedge out of the way. We passed the Marconi Signal
Station and then we walked in front of Lloyds Signal Station
which is a white castellated building on the side of the path.
Bass Point was next with a red and white daymark lookout and
a row of windblown cottages right on the edge of the cliffs,
one had a giant 4' gnome in the garden! In the next cove was
the lifeboat station with vertical steps going down to the water,
the men used a lift cage which was housed on top of the cliffs.
We walked along the path and came into Church Cove where we sat
out on a point to eat our tea on a seat. After a while we continued
and went past a deserted serpentine quarry and out onto the cliffs
again. After a good mile we came to the Devils Frying Pan, which
is a collapsed cave roof, and then the coast path dropped down
through a garden of a lovely big house, down into Cadgwith. The
streets were so narrow we had to stop and wait for the cars to
pass us. We walked past a busy pub and up the hill, turned right
and out to the cliffs again.

The coast path soon turned inland to negotiate the little
rocky inlet of Poltesco. There was a group of people here having
a barbecue on the beach. We went up the steep hillside clambering
over the rocks and eventually reached a caravan site which we
had to walk through. It was very busy, especially the golf course,
We came upon the road now and walked down to Kennack Sands, we
were surprised to see people still swimming here at 8.30pm, We
walked along the path at the back of the grey sanded beach and
crossed a bridge over a large pool, we then had to climb up a
steep cliff again, which led to a flat cliff top that went on
for over a mile winding through fields of corn untill we came
to Spernic Cove. Here we found a gateway in a field that led
us back to the deserted lane where the car was waiting. It was
9.30pm and nearly dark now. We got back to the Lizard and all
the car park was deserted. It was really dark now and all the
shops and cafe's were either sweeping up or closed.
